Translation for Campi Fascisti main page:
Grupignano – Camp for prisoners of war n. 57
Grupignano, locality in the municipality of Premariacco (Udine) – Italy
Camp type: Prisoner of war camp from May 1941
Source: DPG27
In operation since May 1941, the P.G. No. 57 of Grupignano (location along the road from Udine to Cividale) has 4,600 places for non-commissioned officers and troops and 22 places for senior officers, all in barracks (see DPG27). On March 1, 1942, 1,595 prisoners of war were present in the camp (see DPG02 and DPG04). Figure that rises first to 2,484 (September 1942) (see DPG17 and DPG18), and then to 4,473 (March 1943) (see DPG35 and DPG36).
In August 1942 there is news of an unsuccessful escape attempt by two New Zealand soldiers who are wounded by a machine gun shot (see PGGU03). At the end of October 1942, another escape attempt, this time through an underground tunnel, involved 19 prisoners who were however captured again in a short time (see PGGU04, PGGU05 and PGGU06).
The majority of the internees are servicemen of Australian, New Zealand and English nationality. But there are the presences, actually few, of prisoners of war from the former Yugoslav army and some Greek soldiers. Soldiers were also taken from Cerchignano to be sent to the labor camps for prisoners of war. In particular, two documents attest to the departure of prisoners of war from the PG camp. N. 57 towards the newly established PG field No. 120 of Chiesanuova (a camp adjacent to the concentration camp for civilian internees of Chiesanuova managed by the soldiers of the II Army). The first document is dated March 3, 1943 (see PGCH01) and concerns the establishment of a group of 50 officers. of New Zealand nationality to be sent to the work detachment of Cittadella (Fratelli Gottardo farm), while the second – dated 10 March 1943 (see PGGU01) – concerns another 60 New Zealanders to be used again as agricultural workers at the VIII work detachment, this too like the previous employee of the basic labor camp P.G. No. 120 of Chiesanuova. Previously, in October 1942, a group of 300 prisoners of war of New Zealand nationality had left from Grupignano for the nearby Torviscosa labor camp (n. 107) (see PGTO01)
Camp research P.G. N. 57 of Grupignano is still to be completed.

PG abbreviation
The full title is ‘Campo Concentramento di Prigioniere di Guerra’ (prisoner of war concentration camp). They were not concentration camps in the normal sense of the word. Camps were normally prefixed PG, but could be referred to as CC, Campo or Campo PG. The exception was the 2 Dulags and 1 Stalag within Italy, which were German controlled transit centres for POWs being transferred to Germany. The camps were originally known by their place names, and numbers were not introduced until early 1942. There are some camps with no numbers, perhaps they closed before early 1942?
PM abbreviation
Camps in Italy were divided into postal areas, each area designated ‘PM [number]’. PM translates to ‘Posta Militare’, meaning ‘military mail’. The number indicated the central postal reception area for the camps’ mail.
