Stalag VIIA Moosburg
Neustadtstraße 100, 85368 Moosburg an der Isar, Germany
The POWS would come by rail to Moosburg Station and would then be marched to the camp. Upon arrival they would undergo the registration process and be assigned to their barracks. The population of the camp when liberated is estimated to have been 70,000 but this could have been much more. There were many nationalities in camp but French prisoners made up just under 50% of the population.
The American, UK and French prisoners were treated relatively well under the terms of the Geneva Convention, they received Red Cross parcels and were allowed to write and receive letters although these were censored. They also had facilities for sports and were able to stage shows and plays etc. Unfortunately the Russian and Polish prisoners weren’t so lucky in that Joseph Stalin did not sign the Geneva Convention and in view of this the German guards felt that they could treat these prisoner however they wanted. In fact there is a cemetery on the site where there is approximately 1000 graves and I was told that 80% of these are Russian and Polish.
There is a voluntary group of citizens whose goal is to preserve the history of Stalag VIIA and keep alive the memory of the prisoners. They have a website
In April 1945 the camp was liberated by US Forces
