Stalag VIIIB/344 Lamsdorf
& Stalag VIIIB Teschen
This is not a complete list
Scroll down for the alphabetical list
but please read the preceding notes first.

New names are not being added to this list at present.
However, a completely new website is under preparation that will include all these names and the documents linked to them. On the new site it will be much easier to add names, documents and photos,
and it will be very easy to search for names, places and other information.
More information will be posted here in due course, and on our Facebook group pages.

This is a list of some of the names of the British and other Commonwealth inmates of
Stalag VIIIB / 344 at Lamsdorf, together with links to whatever information is known about them.
Of course, there were possibly more than 40,000 POWs who were at this camp at some time or another during the war,
so we will probably only ever have a small proportion of the names.
Picture
Where a name is followed by numbers, eg 4/13, this means that the name is mentioned in The Clarion, eg in Issue number 4, page 13. To access this,  click here: Clarion.

For other names, just click on the name and you will be taken to the relevant file, or to a relevant website. Some files might take a little while to load, particularly if they include pictures, so please be patient. Sometimes the pictures don't appear immediately - they can take longer than the text to appear.

Some links will take you to the Wartime Memories website, in which case you will need to scroll down the page until you find the name you are looking for. Sometimes there is more information about the name concerned, and sometimes it will only be a name in a list - but there may well be some useful background information. Some names are mentioned in articles about other people, so search carefully.

Many thanks to the owners of all the other websites to which we provide links.

LISTS
If anyone else has a complete list of the POWs from a regiment, squadron or other unit, group or organisation etc, please contact: mail@lamsdorf.com   and these can be added to the list. The names will be listed individually too in due course*.
*The names on the lists might not all be listed individually yet on the alphabetical list below (it takes a long time to do this).

POWs who died in captivity
About 500 prisoners died at Stalag VIIIB/344 at Lamsdorf, mostly from illness, accidents or war wounds, probably fewer than 1% of the men who were at the camp at some time or another. They were originally buried at Lamsdorf but moved to the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery at Krakow after the war. Before the hospital at Lamsdorf came into being, the sick at Lamsdorf were treated at the hospital at Langenbielau: those who died were buried in Langenbielau Catholic Cemetery, and these graves were also moved to the Commonwealth plot at Krakow. There are some other graves there too, of airmen who lost their lives during the Warsaw supply drop and the bombing of factories, railways and other strategic objectives. Some of these airmen were originally buried in Warsaw. The majority of the graves are of Lamsdorf POWs. There is a list of those buried on this link (the former POWs start at page 3).

Air Forces Personnel
This list was compiled by Ross McNeill from the AIR20/2336 Records file held at the Public Record Office, Kew, London.
Air Force POWs in all camps are listed - Lamsdorf is identified as 344. Where 8B is shown, this means Teschen.
The PoW names are in alphabetical order and include RAF/RAAF/RCAF/RNZAF/SAAF and Occupied Countries aircrew.
Camps and names are generally correct for March/April 1944 with some entries being correct up to February 1945.

BAB 21 (E793) A list of the POWs at this Working Party, compiled by Keith Newman.
See this as a open document spreadsheet by clicking here.

British Army POWs of the Germans (all camps, not just Stalag VIIIB/344 Lamsdorf)
This list  shows Lamsdorf as 344 - 8b is Teschen.
This is a very big file and might take a long time to download.

Canadians captured at Dieppe listed in a Canadian newspaper (these might not all have been at Stalag VIIIB/344)

French Canadians captured at Dieppe who were in the Fusiliers Mont-Royal.
Very kindly supplied by Simon Leduc.

Please note: we have no information about former POWs apart from what is already on this website. Every week emails are received from people who say "Please can you give me more information about my father/grandfather/etc who was at Lamsdorf? Regrettably the answer is "no", as we only know what you tell us. We have no other records.
