Private Charles Andrews was a member of the 1st Battalion the Highland Light Infantry, 127th Infantry Brigade. He was wounded and taken prisoner at Ypres on the 28th May 1940. First sent to Stalag XIIA, he was transferred to Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf, from where he was repatriated to Britain in October 1943.

In October 1943, under an agreement between Germany, Britain, and the United States, there was a repatriation of around 13,500 sick and disabled prisoners for 21,000 Germans and Italians.
