Blakeman, A G
Private Alec George Blakeman
My grandad was a PoW at Stalag VIIIB/344 (I believe 1941-45), his name was Pte Alec George Blakeman. He worked in the coal mines while at the camp. He was one of the lucky ones to be liberated by the Americans during the Death March, and he stayed with them for a short time afterwards acting as a translator.
Attached is a photograph that has only recently been acquired by my family, which may be of interest to you. It’s a picture of Magpies FC 1944 at the camp, my grandad is the fullback at the back far-right. The ball at the front reads ‘Magpies FC 1944’ and the back of the original photograph bears the stamp of the camp, Stalag 344. I’ve also attached a picture of the tin he still kept with the badge and hand-carved medal for winning that tournament, and a picture of his dogtags.
