I have information regarding a POW that was held in Italy during 1942 – 1943. He was my Grandfather on my mothers side. He was born on 18 October 1914 died on 31 August 1980. The details I have are as follows:
Pte James Walter Bush # 13266
Member of the Allied forces – ID No 35633
He joined the Union Defence Force on 26 April 1940, he joined in East London, South Africa.
He was deployed from Durban via ship, SS Mauretania and sent to the Middle East (Africa). He arrived in the Suez on 21 June 1941 and his Unit: No.6 M.T Coy, att 14 Fd AmB for a period.
He was reported missing on 20 June 1942, confirmed a POW on 7 November 1942. He was held in Italy, we are not sure which camp though. He was repatriated on 4 July 1943. Spent some time in hospital before being discharged officially on the 22 September 1943 due to his medical condition.
