Information provided by Neil Carey

Dad was taken prisoner by the Germans in the Anzio bridgehead in May 1944. As the Germans retreated he was held in at least one camp in Italy before being transferred to Stalag VIIIB.

While in the camp in Italy he had his portrait drawn by an official German war artist, Heinz Hindorf. Dad wrote his address on the portrait, and after the war the artist posted it to him in Scotland.

Like so many POWs Dad never really spoke of his experiences in the camps, or on the Long March. Occasionally we could get some snippets of information out of him. Most of these snippets will be familiar to family members of POWs – possibly the most familiar will be the habit of never throwing anything away because “you never know when it will come in useful”.

The column of the Long March that dad was on took the following (approximate) route: Lamsdorf; Luban; Goerlitz; Bautzen; Meissen; Jena; Weimar; Erfurt; Gotha; Eisenach; Ziegenhain (Schwalmstadt), then finally Adorf (Diemelsee) where he left the column. In Adorf he was sheltered by the mayor, until the arrival of the Americans. Judging by the name in his tiny notebook, the 1st American he saw was a PFC Jack F Singleton of the 28th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron.

Dad left Lamsdorf on 22nd January, and arrived in Goerlitz on 9th Feb. According to his notes, this was 297 km. in 19 days, averaging 15.6 km. (approx. 10 miles) per day. From Goerlitz he gives more of a daily summary of distance covered, and (minimal) rations. In 31 days (starting 10th Feb.) they covered some 527 km. ranging from 18 to 30 km. per day, with 4 rest days. They averaged 17 km. per day (approx. 11 miles). On 2 days their rations were nothing, on 2 others it was soup only.
