Joseph was shot on 27th March, 1942 when working at Heydebreck, by German Guard Gerfreiter Sontag for refusing to lift and push a heavily laden wheelbarrow that he stated was too heavy for him. Records of War Crimes at National Archives WO30912240 (598478)

He was initially buried as a criminal as he was regarded as an inciter of mutiny. His body was thrown into a hole in the ground somewhere in the area.

Following the shooting of Gunner John Miller on the 9th May, 1942 his body was exhumed and he was given a military funeral at Cosel Old Cemetery.

He is now commemorated at KRAKOW RAKOWICKI CEMETERY
