The type of personal information we collect and why

Most of the personal information we process is provided to directly by users. We currently collect and process the following information:

  • Any personal information users submit when contacting the charity through this website, including stories and photographs.
  • Names and email addresses of users who submit contact forms. This is to enable us to respond to your enquiries.
  • Email addresses of donors. These are required to send proof of payment.
  • Names and addresses of donors that consent to us claiming Gift Aid on their donations. This is a requirement of UK charity law.
  • IP addresses may be collected for anti-spam and security purposes
  • Metadata including image location when users submit images to the site containing EXIF data

We also receive personal information indirectly, from the following sources in the following scenarios:

  • Personal details supplied by one user about another individual. This is usually to tell us of the history and experiences of a prisoner of war but may occasionally include other individuals.

We use the information that given to us only to fulfil our mission of providing information to the public about prisoners of war and related historical persons and events.

Financial information used in the processing of donations is not held by us but is processed directly by our payment gateway provider for the sole purpose of processing your transaction. Our payment gateway provider is currently Stripe.com. Their privacy policy will be available during checkout and is also available at https://stripe.com/privacy.

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), the lawful basis we rely on for processing this information will be one of, or a combination of the following:

  • Your consent. You are able to remove your consent at any time. You can do this by contacting us using the details above.
  • We have a legal obligation.
  • We need it to perform a public task.
  • We have a legitimate interest.

Note on embedded media

Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.
