Stalag 339 was a German controlled camp. The seaport of Trieste is located at the Gulf of Trieste, on a narrow strip of Italian territory lying between the Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. It is the capital of the region of Friuli Venezia Giuia and lies about 46 miles (74 km) south of Udine.

Note: Distinct from Stalag 339 Mantua, which was re-designated Dulag 339 Mantua.
