Information provided by Kathy Nott :

My Dad, Edward George Kennell – L/Cpl. 6918754 – was captured at Gazalla in the western desert and put in a compound for six months at Tripoli 6th June 1942.

They left Tripoli on a coal boat, battoned below to Naples. From there they were taken to Campo 53 South of Rome by train. They stayed for about 3 months and then transported to Campo 146 Pavia, N. Italy where he worked in rice fields.

In October 1944, the Germans arrived to take them to a train at Pavia to Germany but they missed the train and had to sleep in a field. In the morning it was very foggy and they became parted from the column and the Germans, so they decided to make a run for it. They arrived in Lake Como after walking for 4 weeks and eventually arrived in Switzerland after many adventures. I can go on and write about the journey to Switzerland, also his life under the Italians at Pavia POW camp.
