Serres, M
Maurice Serres
At the time of the outbreak of WWII my father was a Franciscan brother, referred to in a TocH journal at the time as ‘one of the brown brothers’.
His name was Maurice Serres. He was a member of the Royal Army Medical Corps and was captured in Crete, then taken as a prisoner of war. I have letters sent to him at the Stalag, plus letters he sent.
In 1944 he was sent back to Hilfield Friary in Dorset, although I’m not sure why; he might have been ill. I have letters sent to him at the Friary from some of his colleagues still in Stalag VIIIB. Some time after the war he left the Franciscans and went to Stepney in London, where he later met my mum.
Sadly, he died quite a few years ago so I can’t ask him any more details, and there is no one left who knew him at that time.
