My father, Walter Spencer, was an acting Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards who were fighting a rearguard action Furnes late May 1940.

He was captured and sent to Stalag VIIIB where he remained until the “Death March” January – April 1945.

I have a map (German 1939 roadmap) that he marked the route of the march that took these men roughly west across into Germany and I have sourced another document that gives the names of all the places where the march stopped during these months. The route on the map and the document align so together present an interesting perspective on the march.

I also have photos of him at passing out parades (Aldershot 1939) and at the camp Stalag VIIIB plus his pay book, missing in action telegram and various other documents.

B. Spencer

[Editors note: Map 4 suggests he was liberated on 12.04.1945]
