My father, Bertram N. Tabram, was in the Queen Victoria Rifles and was taken POW at Calais (1940). He was imprisoned in Stalag VIIIB and remained in the Polish area all war. He worked in an Epsom salts factory for a while and with sugar beet (not sure if this was in the fields or factory). I remember him once saying that at the end of the war they woke to find all the German guards had gone and that he was eventually (a few days) returned to the UK in Dakota aircraft (possibly US owned not sure).
