I was very interested in your article in this week’s Folkestone Herald.
My father Percy Alfred John Taylor was also in Stalag VIIIB for around 5 years, he was aged 20 and was captured in France. He was a private serving in the 4th Buffs Army. I have some very treasured photos during his time there but also have a photo taken in 1940 in France just before his capture. I have recently been looking on websites about Stalag VIIIB and have been astounded at what there is about it. I had no idea that the camp was so large and infamous. It s very moving to read the testimonies.
Sadly my father passed away in April 2003 aged 82. How I wished I had asked a lot more questions about his time there when he was able to tell me but unfortunately the last few years he had Alzheimers. I know he worked in the mines & that there was a Czech guard that was very kind to him . I have a group photo in the snow and written working party E334. Also he did recount that he wanted to take part in a play so deliberately injured some fingers on his right hand to excuse him from the mine. I have 2 photos of that play and a hand sketched programme, now torn .
If you think you might be interested in what I have, I will try to send copies to you. It must be very moving to visit the site & museum and maybe I could do the pilgrimage at some stage. We must ensure that the hardships that our fathers endured are not forgotten with time and the artifacts are not lost.
