Jack was born at 45 Manderville Street, Darnall, Sheffield on the 26th April 1921. In 1938 on his 17th Birthday he enlisted at Sheffield, England in the army reserves, York and Lancaster Regiment. On 2nd September 1939 he was mobilized at Pontefract and posted to the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) Centre Staveley, joining the 2nd Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment.
