My uncle Lance Corporal Austin Vaughan Cooke was captured in Crete in 1941 and spent the rest of the war in this Stalag but was repatriated to England in May 1945. I think his service number was NX8410, Divisional Intelligence in North Africa.

He enlisted into the 2/2 Bn AIF and sailed with the 6th Division to Palestine then to North Africa where he moved to the 16th Brigade HQ Intelligence Section. From here following the routing of the Italian army, he went to the ill-fated Greek Campaign where he was finally captured on Crete. From Crete the POWs were taken to Salonika as a transit stop before being loaded on cattle trucks on rail for the long journey to Germany. This was a portion of his life he spoke very little about.
