I have just seen your website while researching my father’s life history.

He was a POW at Lamsdorf between Oct 1942 and the Long March in Jan 1945.

His name was James Frederick Grier. Born in Ireland 27th May 1918. Died 18th Oct 2012.

My father flew as an Air Observer on a Whitley bomber as part of Coastal Command 10 OTU, when they had to land on a beach near Brest as they ran out of fuel on the night of 21st Sept 1942. The crew was captured by the Germans and eventually several of the crew ended up in Stalag VIIIB / Stalag 344.

While a POW my Father played rugby – I have a photo of my Father as captain of the ‘Irish International Rugby Team, ’Blarney Boys’, Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf, taken in early 1944. It is signed on the back by the members of the team.

At the time of capture he was a Warrant Officer. While interned, his POW no. was 27154.
Also interned in Lamsdorf from his flight crew were:

Flt Sgt E.G.P Hart (POW No. 27180) and W/O I.G. Keiller (POW No. 27181).

Please could you add his and their names to your list?

My father never spoke about what happened to him during his time as a POW, or the hellish journey that he and others had to take as their route back to freedom. The stories on the website give a fascinating insight into the hell that they had to endure and should never be forgotten.
