My grandad Mr James Henry Hewitt, part of the 1st Battalion Queen Victoria Rifles, was captured in Calais on 26th May 1940 and marched to Lamsdorf VIIIB where he was imprisoned 18th June 1940 until 30th June 1940, when he was sent out to working camps at Rudgeshagen (now Rudziniec situated in the mining and industrial area around Gliwice), Gogolin (just north of the chemical factories at Blechhammer, and on the main railway line), Leobschütz (now Glubczyce was the regional Nazi party HQ, as well as having SS and SA training centres there),and Friedencity (unable to trace this place). Then began his 2nd long march in 1945 when I believe the Russians were closing in.

Fantastic site, thank you, it gives me insight I never thought I would get into a period of his life which he doesn’t talk about.
