Shaw, A
Ordinary Seaman Arthur Shaw
As a tribute to my wife’s father Arthur Shaw, born 31 October 1911, died 2nd October 1991, I have attached a copy of his debrief questionnaire that I found at the National Archives, Kew.
Arthur served with the Royal Navy and was captured when his ship ‘The Voltaire’ was sunk in the South Atlantic in 1941.
According to my wife he didn’t talk much about his war and POW years, although he mentioned the ‘long walk’ and had occasional nightmares. It is sad to think of how returning servicemen were expected to get on with it in civvy life after experiencing the horrors of war. Thank God we now know about PTSD and its ramifications.
I have been researching my own Family History for more than 20 years and this is a departure for me, as my wife is now encouraging me to do some research for her.
