Private George Henry (Joe) Stevens
From: Anthony Stevens:
My father, George Henry Stevens, or Pte Joe Stevens was taken prisoner at the fall of Tobruk 21-6-1942. A private in the R.A.S.C, he was held captive-according to his pay book, first in Libya 21-6-42 to 13-9-42, then transferred to El Temura till 8-10-42. I believe he was then transferred to Benghazi and from there by ship to Brindisi.
He was then taken to P.G.70 a camp near Fermo/Monturano I think called Ascoli Piceno where he stayed for 196 days from the 9-10-42 to 22-4-43. He was then transferred to P.G.55 at Busseto, a labour camp where I believe he worked on a farm.
He escaped with others from this camp on 8-9-43 having been there for 161 days. They escaped to Switzerland where they stayed at Adelboden then at Camp d’evades, Degersheim, St Gallen whose commandant was Lt Widmer.
I would like to find his route out of Italy and the places he was stationed in Switzerland if at all possible.
I have a number of photos of him and his friends.
