Bailey-Woods, J
Private Joseph Bailey-Woods
My father Joseph Bailey-Woods was a prisoner of war at the above camp. When he served in the Highland Infantry (HLI) he was known as Private Woods, Army no: 3327646.
In June 1942 he was taken prisoner in the North African Desert. When he knew the enemy were advancing he tore off his regimental badges and all means of ID & buried them with his notebook. His notebook contained a detailed account of his war experiences to that date. 22 years later his notebook was returned to him. An Italian Army Captain found it weeks later & gave it to his son. When the son came across it again years later he found it & sent it to the Daily Express. They traced him through a name in that book & returned it to him. I have attached the newspaper story re this & also a copy of a picture my father painted of the perimeter of the camp.
My father told me he was also the camp barber & I am in possession of his barber kit which is wrapped in an Argentinian grain sack.
I hope this information is of use to you.
