Roy was detained in the following camps:

Frontstalag 183 Salonika June to August 1941;

Stalag VIIA Moosburg Aug 1941 to early 1943;

Stalag VIII B (344) Lamsdorf early 1943 to January 1945.

Roy escaped from Lamsdorf in January 1945. He was assisted by locals (Poles) and then, in March 1945, obtained travel passes from the Russian Commandant in Krakow so he and his mate could travel to Odessa by train, making the crossing of the Ukraine via Lvov (Lwów – since 1945 Lviv). He travelled by ship from Odessa to Egypt and then to Australian in April 1945.

His movements are recorded in his service record.
