Stalag XXID Posen
Rumuńska 17, 60-318 Poznań, Poland
Stalag XXID was basin in Poznań and contained three camps, Fort Rauch, Fort Prittwitz IIIA and Fort Grolman VIII.
After Marching some 300 miles, and then entrained into Poland, prisoners boots and uniforms were somewhat in tatters. Upon entering XX1D the prisoners were photographed in groups. The men could send the group photo back home to let loved ones know they were captured but OK. These photographs were all taken at XX1D, the men would sit on the same bench in front of a hut [notice the background] they were provided with different uniforms for the photograph, notice Jim-Nobby-Crouch, he is wearing a Polish Cavalryman’s Jacket, all clothes were taken back after the photograph and the men’s old uniforms given back. It was in this camp that the BAB21 Construction Battalion was formed.
Notice the state of Christopher Wilson’s boots.
Nurse Wilson was a favourite
The camp band was also photographed on those benches. Many men on these photographs were sent to Blechhammer BAB21 in early 1942, the men took part in camp activities like the different bands and the theatre productions. The men’s resilience and adaptability to captivity is a credit to them all.
Many hundreds of men sat on those same benches, many photographs survived.
