Stalag VB Villingen
Münsterpl. 2, 78050 Villingen-Schwenningen, Germany
Stalag VB was located in the German Baden-Württemberg region in the Black Forest and at an altitude of 800 metres, on the outskirts of Villingen, 40 km from Freiburg im Breisgau and only about 50 km from the Swiss border. For this reason it was renowned as one of the most easy camps from which to escape. The camp was in the German military region V (5) in the south-west of Germany, headquarters in Stuttgart. In 1941, it contained 15,000 prisoners.
This camp received Belgian, British, Canadian, Serbian, Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Italian and French prisoners of war, mainly Corsicans . Until 1942, these prisoners were mainly employed in agricultural Working Parties and in winter clearing roads. Escapes were frequent, the captured prisoners were sent to the Rawa Ruska retaliatory camp.
