Capua – Prisoner of War Camp No. 66
Capua (Caserta) – Italy
Camp type: Prisoner of war camp from April 1941
Source: DPG27 DPG28
History: In March 1943 the P.G. No. 66 of Capua is described as follows: default and sorting camp with a capacity of 200 seats for senior officers and 6,000 for non-commissioned officers and troops. It consists partly of barracks and partly of tents. It went into operation in April 1941 (see DPG27).
In May 1942, the transformation of the fourth sector of the camp from being served to barracked was ordered (see PGCP01). August 1942 escape attempt ends with the death of two prisoners from gunshot wounds evidently shot by the sentries see PGCP02 and PGCP03

Its function therefore seems to be to collect and then sort to other places the prisoners of war coming from the camps of North Africa.

On September 1, 1942, the P.G. No. 66 comes to contain 7,580 prisoners of war from

If we look at the schedules of the PCs divided by nationality, on that date in Capua there were 6,721 English (including a general), 8 Australians, 329 Indians, 453 South Africans, 62 of other nationalities (to which must also be added 7 Serbian officers) (see DPG17 and DPG18).
In October 1942 it had to welcome a part of the prisoners of the dissolved camp pg. 87 by Cardoncelli (see PGVA11). Sanitary visit in February 1943 in PGVA15

At the moment we do not have any other information on the P.G. No. 66 of Capua.
(see PGVA04 on censored letters pg Britons and hygienic conditions of the camps)

Note: Research on Italian prisoner of war camps is still ongoing (November 2012). The information reported here is taken from some documents conserved in the Historical Office of the Army General Staff and concerns only the period from March 1942 to March 1943. The data on this sheet are therefore incomplete and still to be verified.

PG abbreviation

The full title is ‘Campo Concentramento di Prigioniere di Guerra’ (prisoner of war concentration camp). They were not concentration camps in the normal sense of the word. Camps were normally prefixed PG, but could be referred to as CC, Campo or Campo PG. The exception was the 2 Dulags and 1 Stalag within Italy, which were German controlled transit centres for POWs being transferred to Germany. The camps were originally known by their place names, and numbers were not introduced until early 1942. There are some camps with no numbers, perhaps they closed before early 1942?

PM abbreviation

Camps in Italy were divided into postal areas, each area designated ‘PM [number]’. PM translates to ‘Posta Militare’, meaning ‘military mail’. The number indicated the central postal reception area for the camps’ mail.
